Valeri Cangelosi ‘22 is a university studies major with a focus in society, ethics, and law, and minors in philosophy, architectural fabrication and product design. Valeri is presenting her project, The Coloniality of Cosmetics: Resistances to Colonial Determinations of Gender, and is advised by Dr. Omar Rivera from the Department of Philosophy. As part of the Glasscock Summer Scholars program, Valeri attended a two-week intensive seminar titled “Decolonial Feminism as a Critical Methodology” to develop her research question, and then spent the remaining eight weeks of the summer 2021 term solidifying a methodology for her Undergraduate Research Scholars project. Valeri’s research examines how colonialism has affected the views of gender through makeup and cosmetics, clothing, and body alterations, all through the analytical lens of María Lugones’ concept of decolonial feminism.
